CASINO ARIZONA CROWNS NEW "QUEEN OF POKER"
Phoenix Woman Named Top Female Player in the State
SALT RIVER PIMA-MARICOPA INDIAN COMMUNITY, Ariz. - Sept. 17, 2007 - A new "queen of poker" was revealed at Casino Arizona 101 & Indian Bend on Saturday, Sept. 15 during the culmination of the Arizona State Ladies Poker Championship. Deborah Gudinas of Phoenix prevailed against 319 players for the championship, earning the right to be called the 'best female poker player in the state of Arizona.'
"I'm in shock," said Gudinas following her win. "This has been a dream of mine."
Gudinas, 55, who owns Plant Friends, an interior plantscaping business in Phoenix, said she was unsure what she would do with the bulk of her winnings. "I don’t know, but expect that I'll be taking my support group to dinner," she said. As supporters, Gudinas' mother and two sons were on hand to witness the win.
The second annual Arizona State Ladies Poker Championship began on Saturday, Sept. 15 at 9 a.m. The No Limit Texas Hold 'Em tournament continued until 10 p.m. when Gudinas was proclaimed the new "queen of poker." As the new champion, she was awarded $50,000 as well as a championship necklace and trophy. The second place winner received $25,000 and a trophy. The third place winner took home $15,000 along with a trophy. Cash was awarded to the top 45 players.
"This is the second time Casino Arizona has hosted the Arizona State Ladies Poker Championship and I continue to be impressed with the level of skill demonstrated by these women," said Kent Odekirk, poker director at Casino Arizona. "I think it's great that they are embracing No Limit Hold 'Em Poker. It's a great sport."
